Lesson Description

Don't Choke the Note!

Watch the newest episodes of Webcam Sessions!

On this episode of Ukulele Webcam Sessions, Matt covers the unintentional "choking" of notes. He talks about a number of variables that can choke the note, including culprits from both hands. He also discusses sustain and demonstrates how to get a smoother sound.

Matt's talked about sustain before. If you want to learn more about how to improve sustain, check out Episode 52 - The Biggest Weakness or Episode 67 - Use Sustain (with Amazing Grace).

Not all songs call for that smooth legato sound. If you want to learn more about the intentional choking of notes (AKA muting) then check out Episode 57 - The Left Hand Mute. UU+ members can also watch Week 7 of Ukulele 102 where we cover all sorts of different mutes.

  1. Hi Matt,
That was a very timely and much needed lesson for me! I am wondering about the sustain with a slide, what is the goal on sustaining that? How would you approach a Hot Cross Buns slide without it getting monotonous or boring? Thanks, you are a great teacher. 🙂
