My little brother knows how hard I’ve been working on these ukulele challenges so he sent me this video as inspiration.

This is how I imagine @Kahai composes his challenges!

Haha, I wish I could come up with anime music as good as this. No joke, I’m actually using some things from this video you posted to the forum a little while ago:

I always liked One Summer’s Day, and I knew about the extended harmonies from trying to learn it on piano, so I’m trying to incorporate that into my new song. I’m also trying to learn and use those Japanese pentatonic scales, but I don’t know how far I’ll get with that.

One thing I do want to work on is coming up with better melody lines. I do use kind of a cookie cutter method to writing songs, and since they’re usually based on some other music, I think my melodies suffer for it. I also really get sucked in to writing harmonies where I think, “maybe I should pull back, and try to make a stronger melody.”

That’s what I like about the Thursday Lesson Challenge; it forces me to work on things that I’m not great at. With my song for the last challenge, I had a hard time with the drums. I’m not a drummer, so even coming up with those drum parts were a struggle. I think if we didn’t do the Challenge, I would’ve got to the drum part, and gave up, but having a deadline forces me to come up with something, even if I’m not totally satisfied. I’m always super impressed with what you, Daniel and Alan come up with, and what Aaron and Aldrine write, so that also helps with inspiring me to write something new. I’m really bad at lyrics, but seeing what Aaron and Daniel write, makes me think, “maybe I should give it a shot.” Who knows, maybe I’ll write an anime theme for the next one.
