    Hello,

I’ve been working on improvising and I’m trying to take my phrasing to the next level. I was curious about how I should think about playing with chord changes for songs like Europa, Stand by me, and Drop baby drop. For example, if I’m soloing over Europa and the chord changed from C7 to F should I just start out getting to the C on the 4th beat and the F on the first beat. I’m doing this as more of a phrasing exercise to help me hear the changes better when I play.

    Thanks!

    Marc

For anyone who is interested I found this great video of a guitarist talking about using Triads. I know it isn’t on ukulele but I just think about it as a way to practice ear training and music theory. xD

Mike and Aldrine were talking about playing the changes over John Coltrane’s Giant Steps and Vox just made a really informative video on the same topic! Obviously, they watch the stream. Enjoy!

    Hi Marc-
Nice work! I occasionally play around with Europa also but you’re much more accomplished. I was wondering where you got the backing track to practice with? That would be very helpful. Keep up the posts on your progress.

    Hey Rick,

I actually used a loop pedal to make the backing track. That is what I did in the beginning of the song and why I needed to wait for the beginning of the loop to play the intro to Europa. I used a dynamic SM57 mic connected to a TC Helicon Ditto Mic Looper pedal which is run through a yamaha acoustic amp thr5a. Teaching my wife how to play would be a lot more cost effective but she isn’t quite ready yet. haha.

    Best,

    Marc

You’ve got a nice configuration. I’m not there yet. Guess I’ll just stick with recording the pieces I need. Continued success on your playing!
    Cheers,
    Rick
