Kawai's Practice Log

Let’s dive right in!
Yesterday I got a new ukulele (Kanile’a KSE-T) and I’m excited to get back into UU+! I spent a little bit of time trying on a few different string sets. The KSE-T came with Aquila Super Nylgut which I thought sounded ok. I was excited to try on the AGxAQ which I thought sounded nice, but couldn’t get used to the green/blue color. I then tried on some Oasis Warm High G which I thought sounded like garbage. Finally settled on Worth CM46 which I think sound really nice, but I would like to try a few more strings before settling into one.
I have a couple other ukuleles but only room for two to have out in the living room. So I decided to retire the Kala Travel Tenor into the case and kept the Tyde Concert out. The Kala travel was my Low G, and the Tyde was my previous High G so I thought I should switch the Tyde to Low. Currently on the Tyde I have Aquila Reds which I just love on this ukulele. I decided to keep them and just switch out the G. I first tried an old style Oasis Bright Low G, and thought it sounded like garbage. Then I tried a newer style Oasis Warm Low G and love it! I actually would like to get the newer style Bright Low G and try that, but would need to order it.
I had a few hours in the evening after the little one went to sleep to learn a new song and decided to start with “Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai”. This song has such a beautiful and classic Hawaiian vamp! I am so happy I took the time to learn it finally. I feel like I have the vamp down nicely and need to practice the rest of the song a little bit more. I also am excited to be able to confidently add those ghost notes in and have them feel natural. I get the concept but when I play them it just feels out of place still.January 24, 2019 at 11:11 am #23863

Nice job! I could never get used to high tension strings. I know they can have a deeper tone but my hands get tired from having to work so hard. I use the D’addario EJ65T Pro-Arté Custom Extruded Ukulele, Tenor.

Thanks Marc, I’ll pick up a pack of those and give them a try. Still haven’t found the right strings just yet. I’ve downgraded the Worth CM46 and took them off the Kanile’a. Trying the AGxAQ again until more strings arrive in the mail.January 28, 2019 at 1:10 pm #23894
Took a detour from the ukulele this weekend to work on my side project Family Old-Timey Banjo Band!February 1, 2019 at 10:11 am #23913
Tried a few more sets of strings on the instruments and have landed on Oasis Bright Smooth Low G for the Tyde ukulele, and Aquila Red High G for the Kanile’a. Almost all the strings I tried for the Kanile’a produced amazing sound for picking, but felt a little lacking for the strumming. The Reds are the only ones so far that have a nice balance.
Been practicing a bunch on the previous songs listed. Still working on the ghost notes. Had a few hours last night to start practicing Hallelujah. Pretty easy and fun song arrangement, but hard for me to memorize the chord progressions.February 15, 2019 at 11:46 am #23978
Been working on the same songs as above and trying to tighten those up a bit. Had a few live lessons which were very informative. Now I’m working on the song challenge #5! I’ve been noodling with it all morning and my fingers are feeling it, might need to find some kinder strings.February 17, 2019 at 5:14 pm #23990February 25, 2019 at 11:31 am #24043

Live Lesson Challenge #7 – Early Version
My partner and I had our second kid this month, so it’s been a little bit of a challenge to find the time to work on this challenge. I was excited to get something in on time, but I definitely did not find the time to master the slide ukulele for this country feeling song.April 24, 2019 at 5:51 pm #24511
