Lesson Description
We're always trying to improve our UU+ service and provide more options for people to learn to play the ukulele. We brought our friend (and past student) Matt Dahlberg on to help teach his method of strumming. Enjoy!
In this lesson, Matt teaches you his approach to playing one of the most used strumming patterns on the ukulele.
This is part one of Matt's Basic Strumming Course. This course will take you from not knowing anything to strumming some basic strum patterns. He has three other courses (Not-So-Basic Strumming, Jazz and Swing Strumming, Ghost Note Strumming) that are available in the UU Marketplace. You can purchase these courses here.

still strugling instead of strumming, no fault of yours
Hi Marcus,
Are you able to make it to a live coaching session on Thursdays? We’ve helped a few people get unstuck with strumming and we can probably help you figure out what is tripping you up.
Thank you for the great video. It helped me greatly with my strumming pattern. I do catch myself saying down, skip, down, up, skip, up… etc. But, hey, if it helps, it helps.
Great first video set. Cleaned up my technique, Mahalo nui e Matt!
Strumming using missed strokes is very helpful. I marked this as a favorite so I can get my strumming technique to be solid.

Well, it took a lot more than stopping the video and making a few runs through. I think I’ve been through Essential Chords #1 twenty or thirty times to get the rhythm all the way down, but it suddenly became a lot better. I’ve had this marked as a favorite so I could easily come back and practice, and I don’t think I need to do that anymore. Thanks Matt!
I’ve also learned this as the “Island Strum”–it is very pleasurable to play.
getting more challenging…
