This month's Whiteboard Request teaches you how to play "Wipe Out" by the Surfaris. This song was a widespread hit, covered by groups like The Ventures, The Beach Boys, and eventually Pure Heart. It became embedded in pop culture and has been featured in numerous television shows and movies, including Dirty Dancing, The Sandlot, and Meet the Parents. In this lesson, Aldrine walks you through the chords, strumming pattern, and that iconic picking riff. He also shows you how to add even more flavor by utilizing the tremolo to get that speedy sound.

  1. Excellent ! Is there any video explaining the picking technique you use from the second 43 of the video ? (When you use the nail of your thumb for fast picking)
I am trying to do this but this is really hard for me ! ‘:-)

    1. Hey Grom,

For UU+ members, we list all the techniques used at the bottom of the lesson, with links to videos quickly showing you how to play those techniques. I think you’re trying to learn the tremolo. We have a number of videos covering that technique. If you’d like, you can message me directly with the little speech icon at the bottom right hand corner of your screen and I would be happy to get you a list of various videos that go over the tremolo. I hope this helps!

      Aloha,
      -Kira (UU Staff)
