Watch Aldrine play "Island Style" in a previous Aloha Friday Jam

This month's Whiteboard Request covers "Island Style" by John Cruz. This is a perfect tune to play when you want to kick back and relax with some friends, which is probably why it's become one of our favorite songs for Aloha Friday Jams. "Island Style" is comprised of only 4 simple, open chords. It's basic strumming pattern can be spiced up with rolls for a more authentic Hawaiian feel. Aldrine offers two options for the intro, one a simple strumming chord progression, and the other is quick little picking intro that will easily wow your friends. Give "Island Style" a try, and let us know what you think of this "local anthem".

  1. Too fast to be a “lesson”! Reminds me of the old Monty Python routine– “Today we’re going to teach you how to play the flute–blow here and move your fingers up and down there”

    1. Hey Mike – Thank you so much for being a part of the Underground and for providing feedback! Duly noted, we have since discontinued this “Ukulele Whiteboard Request” format in favor of the complete Uke Lessons format (with new lessons released at the beginning of each month!). So be sure to check out the full archive of Uke Lessons for step-by-step instructions on how to play specific songs, from beginner to advanced techniques. There is also a full tutorial of Island Style, complete with Play-Along Video featuring John Cruz (although it was taught and performed in the Key of Bb instead of C). And as always, if you have any questions, need help learning a song, or anything else at all, feel free to contact us directly – UU is always here for you!

    1. Hey Pakalolohaole,

Aldrine played Island Style all the way through in one of our recent Aloha Friday Jams. The song comes up at 40:20 in the REPLAY.

      Aloha,
