Hey UUers!

The weather's hot, the wind is cool - it's a great time to be outside with your uke, playing and having some awesome music-filled days! So this month on Uke Lessons, we bring you the appropriately titled hit song "Best Day of My Life" by American Authors as a tutorial for you and your trusty ukulele. This one is relatively simple to learn and a blast to play, so learn the chords, strumming pattern, and picking for this song and teach it to your friends so you all can jam together (like Aldrine does with his buddies Melia Dudgeon, Addison Bulosan, and Mark Baldonado for the "Best Day of My Life" Ukulele Play-Along).

For more on Melia, our awesome young vocalist on the track, be sure to check out:

Also special THANKS to HA Coffee Bar (on Rice St., Lihue, Kauai) for letting us film and make noise in their lounge area. If you're on Kauai, be sure to swing by for awesome coffee and an open mic on Saturdays from 1-3pm!

Keep rocking that ukulele all summer long, with the songs that get you fired up to learn and grow as an ukulele player! And as always, if you have any questions or need help with anything, we're always here for you. Rock on.

  1. I “get” the strumming pattern as you describe it, I just cant execute it! Man, you’re fast!
Love everything I see you play!

  2. Can i ask for the strumming pattern? i know the chords but i don’t know how to strum it. please…

    1. Hey Lynlyn,

Aldrine covers the strumming pattern at 1:55 into the tutorial video at the top of the page. Hope this helps!

  3. hey, I have a question
how many times do I need to play the strumming pattern of each chord?

    1. Hey Phương Dug!

For pretty much the whole song, you go through the strumming pattern twice for each chord. So for example during the chorus, you do the strumming pattern 2 times on D, then 2 times on G (and repeat). The only exception is during the bridge (“I hear it calling outside my window …”) where you just hold D for a total of 8 strumming patterns. That should be it! Be sure to watch the Play-Along Video and play along so you can see when the changes come in. Hope that helps – let us know if you have any other questions!

  4. Hello from Roseville,
    Great content.
I was referred to your website from a friend Christy in Roseville California. She and her husband Juan own Kazoku a Japanese restaurant out here. She is originally from Hawaii. They both play Uke. I just took it up and love it. They have awesome food and shaved ice. If you ever find yourself out here email me so I can take you out there. Love you website.

  5. Hi there! I’m from Germany and I’m a 15 year old girl. Your Ukulele lessons are awesome, you’re the only ‘ukulele teacher’ I could find on the Internet whose lessons are as useful as yours. Please keep doing these lessons, it helps me and many other ukulele players a lot. 🙂
