Techniques Used in Lesson:

Hey UUers!

THANK YOU to everyone who played along with (and liked on Facebook) our utterly ridiculous April Fool's day prank yesterday. And now for this month's real episode of Uke Lessons - "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi!

This one comes complete with a pretty fun picking interlude that happens throughout the song. It may take a little while to memorize and get it down, but practice and you'll have it in no time! Check out the video for the chords, strumming pattern, and picking and rock this 80's classic rock tune until you can rock no more.

Hope you have an awesome April - keep strummin'!

Aloha,
-UU Staff

  1. Hey Paul and Gavin! Here’s a little graphic for the basics of changing chords during the verses of this song using the strumming pattern that Aldrine provides in the tutorial video:

    Wanted Dead or Alive Strumming

As with any strumming pattern that we suggest, feel free to add or omit up strums, down strums, chunks, etc. as you feel necessary, and don’t get too caught up in the strumming “pattern” by overthinking it – as long as you are keeping time with the music and using your strumming hand to follow the overall rhythm of the song, you’ll be alright.
And if you listen to Aldrine strumming, you’ll notice that he emphasizes certain strums much more than others – for example the two down strums (beats 1 and 2) once you reach the F chord, because they coincide with the emphasis on the lyrics, “was-ting” and “get back,” in the first verse).
The strumming pattern goes pretty fast, so if you want to simplify it, please feel free to do so, as long as you’re staying on beat and having fun with it! Try it out and let us know what you come up with – rock on

    Aloha,
    -Aaron (& the UU Staff)

  2. Hi there, I’m really struggling with chord transitions and knowing with the strum pattern when to change chords, cheers!
