So, it’s finally here (for real, this time) – the 2009 Ukulele Underground Awards (“The Undies!”) will be going down right here in the Underground, TODAY (Saturday, Mar. 6th) at 2pm Hawaii Standard Time (4pm Pacific, 7pm Eastern)! Check back right here on the home page, and we’ll post a link to the streaming site.

We’ll be giving away lot of free stuff, crowning the best uke videos voted by YOU, and hanging out with all y’all. Can’t wait to see everybody there!

Hey UUers!

Since 6am this morning, Tsunami Warning sirens have been sounding in Hawaii due to the earthquake in Chile. We are all safe here – no tsunami made it to Hawaii, unfortunately, the roads haven’t opened yet and we will have to postpone the Ukulele Underground Award Show for now. Many thanks to YOU for stopping by, we are really sorry for this unfortunate change in plans. We still have LOTS of free stuff to give away and awards for the winners, so the Undies will be rescheduled soon!

On this week’s episode of Uke Minutes, Aldrine breaks down the concept of “triplets” in music and how you can apply it to your ukulele playing. Use triplets to indicate breaks between sections of a song or play around with them in your strumming or picking to emphasize specific parts of the song!

Check it out – so today, Aldrine & Aaron are heading out to California to attend the 2010 NAMM Show! All of the newest, coolest, awesomest people and companies in the music industry will be there and although NAMM is closed to the public, UU will be covering all things ukulele and reporting back to you right here – so watch out for some super sweet videos from NAMM this week!

Got a question about flat picks? Post it HERE!

Hey UUers!

In the world of ukulele playing, the use of picks is a subject often overlooked (and sometimes vehemently shunned), but there are still those who use them and a few that actually prefer them – so in this week’s episode of Uke Minutes, Aldrine goes over the use of flat picks!

Of the types of flat pick materials out there, felt and rubber are the most commonly used picks for ukuleles. Flat picks are made out of many other materials including different types of plastic, metal, glass, wood, or stone. But be careful with picks made of harder substances (especially if you don’t have a pick guard on your uke) as you can easily damage your soundboard when you start strummin’ up a storm. So give picks a try … you might just find something you like!

It’s 2010 and we’re ushering in the new year with ukuleles, good friends, great music, and the ukulele community that keeps on giving! Thank you to everyone who has been a part of Ukulele Underground so far: viewers, visitors, Forum members, contributors, collaborators, and everyone in between! You guys have been amazing. We want to make 2010 in the Underground even awesomer for you, so if you’ve got the time, please check out our little UU Survey and submit the heck out of it.

The Wine Country Ukulele Festival was amazing, especially because we got to jam with lots of really cool people (seriously, really cool: Watch this epic throwdown of “Breezin’” featuring Aldrine, Dominator, Kalei Gamiao, and Brittni Paiva!). Special thanks to Russ & Trina, plus everyone who met up with us in St. Helena & San Francisco! We had a blasty-blast.
