The issue with geared (I heard) is that they are heavier than friction tuners. So if you have a small light soprano ukulele, the geared tuners might make the head quite heavy throwing off the balance of the instrument. I have a tenor and there’s no issue there – So always geared. The next decision is whether open grover tuners are much better than the closed tuners and chinese tuners that makes like Kala use?

Not true my Kala has vintage grover tuners. Thats what it came with brand new
